Biography

Fabrizio Valpreda is architect, designer and associate professor of design at Politecnico di Torino. His background is based upon the co-existence of the analog tradition merged with the digital innovation, being him a digital immigrant and an early adopter of the IT revolution potentials in Design development. He works on research and education between digital innovation and analog tradition through Open Design, thus creating new connections between the micro-production methodologies and the new methods offered by the Fablabs typical collaborative approach, with the primary target to create connection between skills in new multidisciplinary environments. Scientific manager of virtuaLAB - Design, a digital lab for design visualization, 3D printing and Interaction Design, he is also member of the Polytechnic of Turin ICT board, academic mentor of Fablab Torino and Design delegate at Teaching and Language Laboratory - Polito (TLLab).

Other activities and projects related to teaching

The teaching activity, carried out in direct connection between the Bachelor's degree course in Design and Communication and the Master's degree course in Systemic Design at the Polytechnic of Turin, is dedicated to the experimentation of open knowledge sharing models through the principles of Open Source Design, experimentation of methods, technologies and techniques of digital fabrication and Making, in local and multidisciplinary work environments (Fablabs). Supporting this approach are the activities as scientific manager of virtuaLAB - Design Polito, where students and researchers can experiment with 3D printing prototyping systems and visual communication tools.
Added to this is the value of the experimentation of the Mentoring path within the TLlab-Polito activities, defining with this new parameters of didactic experimentation in classroom, connecting the experience value of those who have had the opportunity to teach for years to new generations of teachers and students.

Other activities and projects related to research

The research, addressed to the experimentation of methods and tools of Open Source Design, is configured at the theoretical level with respect to the principles of Systemic Design, in the need to provide people, active in a circular economy regime, with the tools of free access to information. At the practical level, operational experiments are configured, with the activation of Open Design projects such as TooWheels (2016 Compasso D'Oro Giovani award) and Felfil (startup activated at I3P - Incubator of the Politecnico di Torino). The principle of connection through knowledge sharing is moreover pursued at the intersection of didactics and research, with hybrid activities, such as between the course of Design for Components (Master Degree in Systemic Design) and Fablab Torino where, working as Academic Mentor, it is practiced the permanent connection between local microproduction activities, didactics and research of Design and the craft, traditional and digital activities of the territory, with the aim of training new figures of Designers, skilled in the local field but also connected to the global technological evolution.
