Biography

Fabio Giulio Tonolo is Associate Professor in the field of Geomatics at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He graduated with honors in Environmental Engineering (Politecnico di Torino, Italy, 2001) and holds a Ph.D. in Geodesy and Geomatics (Politecnico di Milano, Italy, 2005). His main research interest is on the use of Geomatics techniques to provide spatial data services, including acquisition, management and processing of multi-scale and multi-sensor geo-spatial data, with a focus on satellite remote sensing and emergency mapping. He is Secretary of the Governing Council of the Italian Association of Remote Sensing which he joined in 2014 (ordinary member since 2003). He is involved in the International Working Group on Satellite based Emergency Mapping (IWG-SEM) that he chaired from April 2013 to May 2014. He was co-chair of the ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) WG VIII/1 - Disaster and Risk Reduction for the period 2012-2016 (secretary in the period 2008-2012). He worked as senior researcher and geographic information specialist at ITHACA (2009-2018), where he coordinated the emergency mapping activities and covered the role of internal Project Manager for several international projects. He has been lecturer in several technical training courses on Mapping, GIS and Remote Sensing and he is co-author of more than 80 national and international publications, among which an article for the journal Science.
