Research topics

  • • Another important research topic is civil architecture during the Baroque and late Baroque periods, with special reference to courtly residences in the Sardinian mainland states and their relationship to the city-capital and the European context. This analysis – which also involves themes of patronage, professional designers and builders, architectural reference models, the distribution, decoration and social use of space – has encompassed some of the outcomes linked to the first half of the 19th century in Piedmont and the city of Genoa. Alongside this main line of research is the study of aristocratic residences, analysed through case studies, and that of care structures. This activity developed within the context of the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Torino, but also in research centres funded by Regione Piemonte (Reggia di Venaria Reale) and the Compagnia di San Paolo (Palazzo Reale di Torino), in co-ordination with the respective Superintendencies.
  • • History of gardens is the central research topic, in particular those aspects most strongly influenced by architecture and the territory, between the 16th and 19th century, and in relation to reference models and cultures, specific professional figures, and building sites. His research activities developed in close co-ordination with the Superintendencies and Regione Piemonte who commissioned the work (Gardens of Venaria Reale, Palazzo Reale di Torino, Moncalieri Castle). His teaching activities, involving specialisation courses and masters at the Faculty of Agrarian Studies at the University of Turin and at the Royal Residences of Savoy Consortium should be seen in this context.
  • • Lastly, the final sector focused on the study of architecture and gardens in the 19th and 20th centuries by taking examples from Turin and parallel cases throughout Europe, paying special attention to Hungary and the Magyar Építészeti Múzeum, the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, the Art History Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Faculty of Architecture in Budapest.
