Beyond the MAP #13 | Heritage in Between

The unresolved destiny of the Friendship Park in New Belgrade, Serbia
A seminar of the "Beyond the Map" lecture series by the Master's Degree in Architecture for Heritage

The forcibly ruptured strands of cultural and historical continuity bear the unmistakable imprint on a dissonant stance toward the values of their era. This rupture compels urgent question: how is emergent heritage discerned and classified, by what mechanism is it recognized, and on what grounds are its authenticity and integrity adjudicated? The lecture exposes the inherent dissonances of emerging heritage – forms of patrimony that persist within contexts and functions for which they were neither assumed nor intended – thereby destabilizing conventional frameworks of value. The Friendship Park complex in Usce, New Belgrade, serves as a pragmatic case: an unresolved palimpsest in which the vanished cultures architectural agents and spatial arrangements linger as culpable witnesses, suspended in liminal identity that challenges normative taxonomies of preservation, legitimacy and cultural memory.
