Urban Generation; A design approach for climate change adaptation and mitigation

A Design Approach for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
3 November 2025 – Castello del Valentino, Politecnico di Torino

The Urban Generation Seminar and Workshop mark the concluding event of the PRIN PNRR research project “Urban Generation; A Design Approach for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation.”
The initiative aims to share the project’s outcomes and open a broader discussion on how architectural and urban design can actively respond to the challenges of climate change through the integration of scientific knowledge, simulation tools, and design experimentation.

The morning seminar (10:00–12:30, Stanza della Caccia) will present the main results achieved by the research teams involved in the project, focusing on climate-adaptive urban design, nature-based solutions, and the use of digital simulation tools for urban microclimate assessment.
Researchers will discuss how data-driven approaches can guide sustainable design decisions at multiple scales — from buildings to open spaces — and how such tools can support design strategies that enhance comfort, energy performance, and environmental resilience.
The seminar will conclude with international experts sharing their visions on climate adaptation in urban design, offering diverse perspectives on the methodological, technical, and cultural dimensions of designing for resilient cities.

The afternoon workshop (14:30–18:00, Aula 2V) will offer a hands-on session open to Master’s and PhD students. Participants will explore the methodological pipeline developed within the project, applying ENVI-met and Grasshopper to real case studies. The workshop will guide attendees through the process of analyzing urban configurations, testing design scenarios, and interpreting microclimatic data as part of a design workflow.
Through practical exercises, students will learn how to bridge environmental simulation and creative design thinking, understanding how such tools can inform and inspire the decision-making process in early design phases.

Participation is free and open to everyone, but registration is required for the workshop (limited seats). Both the seminar and the workshop will be held in English, and a 6-hour attendance certificate will be provided to workshop participants.
The seminar will also be live-streamed for remote attendees.
