In recent years, historical religious heritage has been central to significant national and international research projects in architectural history. The research presented and discussed during the course has been selected to illustrate current methodologies of study and analysis specific to the discipline, updated both in content and through the use of innovative digital tools, including those used to present the results achieved. These studies have been developed within a holistic and interdisciplinary framework, drawing on contributions from fields such as geomatics, representation, and restoration.
A further key area of interest is the multiscalar approach, which demonstrates the discipline’s capacity to address diverse contexts, from the detailed analysis of building materials to the territorial scale and the interpretation of historical landscapes. The course enables students to acquire analytical and research tools for investigating the various components and stratifications of architecture in urban and rural contexts, as well as the relationships of monastic and conventual institutions with society, institutions, economic systems, and forms of power. Particular attention is devoted to material culture, construction techniques, building-site organization, and stratigraphic analysis, all of which play a central role in the projects presented.
